Fez is the leading religious centre of the country and home to the oldest university in Morocco; so you will encounter much of the traditional past of the culture in the everyday life. This perfectly blends with other modern regions inside and outside Fez. Mosques and street markets are a vivid representation of the local way of living that offers medieval features as well as French and Spanish remains of ancient colonization. Customs haven’t varied at all, so make sure to learn basic social rules before you depart. Fez is a safe destination but it get very crowded most of the times, so be careful with your belongings.
Fez is internationally renowned for its annual World Sacred Music Festival. It gathers musicians and bands from all over the planet to share their religious and musical traditions for one week. This festival was founded in 1994 and year after year has gained respect and recognition all over the world. All genders get together, including those relatively unknown as the Indonesian Gamelan or Folk music from central Asia. Along the Festival there is a three day Forum held for politicians, professionals, social activists and religious leaders under the aim "Giving Soul to Globalization".
