The Incas aborigines made Cusco a holy city, and a base of their vast empire. When the Spaniards invaded the city, they toppled down most of the Incan constructions in an attempt to minimize their influence and power. The result today is a blend of cultures, with many layers of history, and plentiful places to visit, to understand, and to discover. Cusco remains one of the most radiant expressions of Amerindian and mestizo; a mix of aborigines and Spaniards, a population and culture in all the American continents. The city displays local traditions, rituals, beliefs, festivals, monuments, and natural panoramas whose beauty can only be grasped once there.
More than five centuries of history are present in Cusco’s stone streets and buildings. Today, this city is dynamic, lively, progressive, and revolutionary. For this reason, and for all the beauty and history that is part of Cusco’s essence, it has been declared one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
