Copan is a small city located in the western highlands just 14 km (5 miles) from the frontier with Guatemala. Copan has transcended history for having been the land of the Maya Empire, whose remains are still quite present in the city.
Though small, Copan is a prosperous and well-preserved city that is being acknowledged for its Mayan ruins, forests, narrow and winding streets. Copan’s population descends directly from Mayan aborigines, and feel proud of their roots, so they are quite friendly and ready to help you with whatever you might need.
In other words, we could describe Copan as a beautiful small town with stoned streets, traditional white-washed adobe houses with red tiles, which suits perfectly with the harmony and history of the city. Copan houses the Mayan ruins, which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site for their contribution to the understanding of ancient civilizations. Being mainly a rural town, Copan lives on agriculture and tourism. Yet its world-wide known ruins have been attracting archeologists, students, epigraphers, architects, and travelers from all the world throughout decades. In spite of the many cultures that constantly merge in Copan, the town has managed to keep unaltered its essence and genuine identity.
