Quito is placed in the north of Ecuador. It’s Ecuador’s capital, and it’s beautifully located on the lower slopes of Pichincha volcano in a narrow and fertile valley of the Andes Mountains. Quito is the oldest South American capital, and for that reason maintains quite much of its colonial aspect. It’s, besides, the highest capital city in the world, at an altitude of 2,850 metres (9,300 ft).
Quito is a city of undisputable beauty. The Andes sets the background for a city with multiple options. At one side, history delights itself with the magnificence of Quito’s colonial architecture, whitewashed houses with red-tiled roofs, and impressive churches and museums. The frantic effect of modernity has been absolutely kept out from these limits. Yet, this doesn’t mean that Quito is only history. Cutting-edge shopping malls, offices, international businesses, and embassies, together with the fresh rhythm imposed by youngsters from all nationalities, abound within the limits of the new area of the city. Past, present, and future merge in just one unbelievable place: Quito.
Quito is divided into the Old City and The New City, the first being an open museum of the city’s history, the latter displaying the hub of Quito’s modernization. The whole city is well-known and appreciated precisely for its well-preserved old town, added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1978. Students and young population in Quito is paramount since the city’s contribution to education is quite significant. Not only is it the house of the Central University, but also of long-standing and prestigious educational institutions as the National Polytechnic School from 1869, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador from 1946. Quito’s Art School, dating from 1552, was the first of its kind in South America, and adds up to the list of cultural institutions in the city. Quito is also a city where young people from many countries congretate. Bars, restaurants, hostels, and internet cafes proliferate, especially, all over the New City area of Quito. Remember that Quito’s altitude is something to be taken into account: you’ll need a couple of days to get used to it!
