Santo Domingo is a large city, major seaport, and capital of the Dominican Republic, located in the southern part of the country, on the Caribbean Sea. Due to its position, Santo Domingo has an important artificial harbor which endows it with an active commercial and tourist movement.
Precisely for this, Santo Domingo shines with the charm of an old continent and the passion of modern Latin America. Its layout and landscapes are striking. It houses the first monuments and institutions of the New World, so Santo Domingo is the leader in many aspects: it has the first defensive fort, the first hospital, the first university, the first palace. Its cobblestoned streets and colorful houses evoke a certain romanticism from those times, which mingles with the dazzling lights of the newborn Santo Domingo.
Even though Santo Domingo is a small city, it is still one of the most vibrant of the Caribbean. It is clearly divided into two zones: the Old Santo Domingo which encompasses twelve blocks with buildings, momuments, museums, parks, and streets from Pre-Columbian and Spanish times. The beauty of this area has awarded it the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site. But, if you walk a little further you’ll come across a sophisticated city, with shopping malls, entertainment, and culture all at your hands.
