Sucre is a city in southern Bolivia, situated in a high mountain valley more than 2,591 meters (8,500 ft) above sea level, which makes the city a site of vast natural beauty. Sucre is the constitutional and legal capital of Bolivia since The Supreme Court convenes there.
Sucre is one of the oldest city in the South American continent, and it is widely considered the most sophisticated and beautiful city in Bolivia due to its fine combination of colonial architecture and modern facilities. Precisely there lies its mystery and splendor. Besides, the city is the market hub of Quechua-speaking communities that inhabit the inner lands of the city, and that still live in their natural environments wearing traditional clothes, not only as a sign of reverence for their own identity, but also as a way of letting others know the region they come from. Sucre is also well-connected to the surrounding communities, and much of its daily activity depends on the constant influx of people coming from and going back to the Bolivian Altiplano to earn their living in the city.
The city’s spectacular layout and well-preserved architecture make Sucre one of the most beautiful colonial cities in South America, a distinction that has awarded it the selection as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. The complexity of its history has also made Sucre the city of "The Four Names", a nickname that refers to the different names it was given throughout its history. Today, it is well-known as "The White City", since most of its buildings and private homes are purposefully whitewashed to preserve its colonial atmosphere. Sucre is relatively small, so it’s easy, and advisable, to walk around the city to get in closer touch with its many museums, shops, restaurants, and of course, its people. Sucre is also the site of one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in South America.
