Located on the northeastern coast of the Brazilian state of Bahia, more specifically on a peninsula that shields the Atlantic Ocean and All Saints Bay, Salvador da Bahia is the third largest city in the country and the site where, many say, the real Brazilian culture was born.
Salvador is the cradle of the first slave markets set up in the New World, so the city is said to be the African Soul of Brazil. Indeed, African cultural roots are strongly present in this part of the world, more than anywhere else, and you’ll notice that in Bahian cuisine, religion, myths, and especially, in its infectious music such as capoeira and candombe. You’ll love the outgoingness of Bahian people as well as the urban design of the city. From stunning mansions and plantations from the times of the Portuguese conquest to colorful little houses framing the narrow streets, Bahia is a crowded, busy and joyful south American city with its own flair and even carnival.
Salvador is a city with a notable collection of colonial buildings which have given it the honor of being part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Apart from its powerful culture, which has marked a unique Brazilian character, Salvador da Bahia is a site where remarkable educational institutions and universities emerged as the first in the country. For all the notoriety Brazil has acquired as regards aspects of safety, Bahia is the safest city in the country and Latin America.
