Maceio retains a particular atmosphere that blends the natural splendor of its surroundings with a remarkable colonial heritage. The city can be easily divided into two areas: the commercial one, where most of everyday life develops, and the old one, which holds the major appeal for tourists, since the best of its architecture and legacy is packed here. The city is just perfect for sun worshippers, since the climate is almost perfect all year-round. Those who pursuit different experiences will also find a place here, since Maceio is a great spot for alternative and outdoor sports and recreational activities.
Maceio developed as a thriving port city and leading sugar export hub. With the years it became an important tourist destination not only for Brazilians, but quite recently for foreigners as well. The city has a special allure for its urban beaches, many lagoons, mangroves, and also for being the outdoor to the Amazonas. Yet natural beauty isn’t the only thing you’ll find in these lands. Maceio has a rich culture, which you can see in its crafts, cuisine, and customs. Today, Maceio is also the home of an important university and a historical institute.
