With a population of about 600,000 Washington, DC is the capital city of the United States of America. DC stands for District Columbia, the federal district that contains the city of Washington. The city owes its name to George Washington, leader during the American Revolution and first president of the US.
Precisely for this, Washington D.C. is the center of the US history, culture, and political life. The city is home to major universities such as Georgetown and it also offers plenty of national and historic monuments and museums such as the famous Smithsonian and the Air and Space Museum. Washington DC, is a muti-cultural city that offers a cozy atmosphere of a small city and also all the advantages of a major metropolis.
The United States president lives in Washington DC and many of the 535 members of the American Congress that work in the city also live here. In Washington, the main business is politics. Also some museums, as well as many national monuments are free and the city is relatively small, so landmarks and tourist places are not really too far away.
