Interview of the Month
Spanish Student for 8 Weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Megan Cooper: Columbia, Maryland
“This experience has opened up my mind like nothing else and on top of that I now know a new language!”
Why did you decide to study abroad? Why did you choose to do it here?
When I finished highschool I wasn't sure what to study afterwards. So I took a year off and did all sorts of things but I was feeling that studying a language was something I needed to do. Since I was very interested in Latin America's culture I figured I could learn Spanish, and that's when I came across Easy Go Languages.
What did you know about Buenos Aires before coming?
I heard about Buenos Aires being the Paris of South America. That was pretty much all I knew. Of course I did my research before coming so I could take advantage of the trip. I also knew some things about Argentina in general but I had to admit it they were mostly preconcepts.
What were your thoughts before coming? Were you concerned about anything?
I was very excited since the moment I decided it. My parents were a little concerned about my security but I think is the usual parents' fear when their little girl is going out of the country by herself for the first time. Any way, Easy Go Languages advisors helped me out a lot, specially at calming my parents down, because they helped me put together a package and gave me and my folks all the information we needed.
What was the first thing that caught your attention?
The many many high buildings mixed with many many green areas. Being from Columbia I'm used to green areas everywhere, but until I came here I couldn't imagine a big city merged with beautiful parks all over.
How did you overcome the cultural shock? What was the most difficult thing for you to get used to?
It was very difficult for me to adapt to the all the crazy drivers on the streets! Specially local buses drivers! They go like crazy! But just one week from my arrival I was already a pedestrian wizard!
I think that taking a Spanish course was the best thing I could do, because I had all the teachers' and staff's support and help.
Have you gone out? What do you think about the nightlife here?
Yes! I have been going out a lot with my friends from the school and the residence. We've been everywhere! From Milongas to modern clubs, going through folcloric peñas and loved it all! People is really friendly and fun!
Would you recommend this trip?
Totally! This experience has opened up my mind like nothing else and on top of that I now know a new language!
