Student Studying for 6 Weeks in Fukuoka, Japan

Ben Ashford
Rhode Island

“I assure you this is the best way of learning a language and feeling a culture! Fukuoka shows itself as it is: exceptional! ”

Why did you decide to study abroad? And why did you choose to do it in there?
I took a couple of private lessons of Japanese a few years ago. From that moment I realize it wasn’t only the language the one that inspire me, it was the entire culture that had me completely captivated.

What did you know about Japan before coming?
I’m a huge fan of this culture, but I have to confess I don’t know much about the history and geography of the place. But that was why I decided to come to Fukuoka and learn all I could. What’s the reason of trying to have an extreme intercultural experience in a nearby country with similar cultures? Maybe this sounds great for some other kind of people; I was looking for something more extreme, more unique.

What were your thoughts before coming? Were you concerned of anything?
I was afraid of getting “Lost in Translation” (lol). But seriously, I was afraid of being unable to communicate with others. That’s the great thing (I think) of coming to a place like my school, completely prepared to help you and really concerned on your learning experience! It gives you freedom but it also gives you tools to be by your own.

What was the first thing that called your attention?
The completely different customs, architectural style, even how people here dressed is different! Is crazy beautiful! I assure you this is the best way of learning a language and feeling a culture! Fukuoka shows itself as it is: exceptional! Fukuoka also gives you lush mountains, sunny beaches, spacious avenues and lively arcades that you can’t stop staring.

How did you overcome the cultural shock? What was the most difficult thing for you to get used to?
It was a little difficult at first, but that was the kind of experience I was looking for. I tried to relax when I arrived, I brought some of my favorite music, candies and pictures of my family, that help me to stay focus and not missing home. Also it’s helpful for introducing me and getting conversational topics!

Have you gone out? What do you think about the night entertainment here?
I went to a couple of Karaoke places. I had so much fun I want to do it again. Fukuoka has a range of possibilities to offer like bars, pubs and night clubs. One thing is great about this place: it spreads an excellent vibe, and sparkles energy and entertainment as the night moves on.

Would you recommend this trip?
I truly recommend you Fukuoka to learn Japanese and I recommend everyone to have one of these life-changing experiences!
